Setting up a reflector list
A reflector list gives members a posting address — mail sent there from a subscribed address goes back out to every other subscriber, so a discussion stays a normal email thread rather than a one-way newsletter. This is the same model classic listserv-style tools use, run from a web admin instead of email commands.
How a post gets redistributed
A member emails the list's own address (for example secretaries@lists.yourdomain.org). If the sender matches an active, subscribed address, the message is redistributed to every other subscriber with Reply-To set back to the list address, so replies continue the thread rather than going only to the original poster. Attachments are forwarded along with the message.
Open or moderated posting
Each list is set independently to open posting (any subscriber can post directly) or moderated (a poster gets a confirmation, and a tenant-wide posting-admin allowlist controls who can send without review). If a message is rejected, the sender can be authorised afterwards and the original message resent — it doesn't need to be resubmitted from scratch.
Digest frequency, per subscriber
Every subscriber chooses real-time delivery, or a daily or weekly digest, independently per list. Digest subscribers get one combined email per list per digest period, rather than an email per post — useful for a busy list where real-time delivery would be too much volume for some members but not others.
Isolated from your real mail domain
Reflector mail is received on a dedicated subdomain (for example lists.yourdomain.org), never on your organisation's actual mail domain — your existing mailboxes and MX records are untouched. A simple mail forwarder on your real domain (e.g. list@yourdomain.org → list@lists.yourdomain.org) keeps the address your members already know working exactly as before.
Setting one up
- Create a list in Postrider and choose a posting address on your reflector subdomain.
- Set the posting policy — open or moderated — and add posting admins if moderated.
- Populate subscribers via CSV import or a Joomla group sync rule, same as any list.
- Point the forwarder on your real mail domain at the reflector subdomain address.
